What is volunteering
Many people want to give back to society somehow, but can't necessarily afford to donate much money to worthy causes. Volunteering for an organization is a good alternative.

If you don't have a wife or children yet, then you probably have some free time to volunteer. Volunteering can make you feel great about helping out a worthy cause. Plus, you can do something that matches your professional skills and interests or something that's just plain fun.

In Nigeria, volunteering is gaining popularity amongst organizations especially non governmental ones. The need for these volunteers is due to events and programmes being organized by the organization which may likely require more hands than the staff of the organization itself.
How to volunteer.
For most organizations, volunteers are invaluable to make them run. Start by looking into organizations that match your interests.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

Investigate before you invest your time
Before you volunteer, research organizations just as you would if you were donating money. Make sure you're putting your hard work into a legitimate and financially viable organization(s) that will prosper.

Additionally, investigate the success of the organizations' programs. Put together a list of finalists that includes only those that are working toward or reaching the goals they set out to accomplish.

Figure out what you can offer
Next, contact the finalists in your search to find out what their volunteer needs are, and to figure out if your interests and skills match those needs. Oftentimes, an organization will ask you to come in for an interview. Depending on what your skills are, you might even be asked to go through training once you are accepted as a volunteer.

It's important to evaluate what you expect to contribute and what you expect to gain. Ask yourself the following questions:

• What level of personal fulfillment do I expect to gain?
• What skills do I possess that will help this organization?
• What tasks am I unwilling or unable to perform?
• What days and at what times am I available?
• How much free time do I have to volunteer?
Commit yourself to a worthy cause
"Commitment" is a word that usually triggers panic or fear in guys. But once you choose an organization and are accepted as a volunteer, it's important that you commit yourself to it. If you're apathetic about volunteering, you shouldn't bother. You need to be passionate about the cause; if you cancel, show up late when you're expected or perform poorly, you're actually hurting the organization rather than helping it.

On the other hand, if you're fired up, reliable and willing to work, you can do tremendous good helping an organization fulfill its mission. Whatever you do not believe in, would not work for you. Believe in whichever organization you’ve made up your mind to be part of.

Give a little bit
Whatever organization you choose to volunteer for, you'll be helping a good cause and helping yourself. Doing something for the common good promises to be a fulfilling experience. In Nigeria, most people do not value the gift of volunteering. Anyone anywhere can volunteer and expect to be treated like a queen or king because they feel they are doing the organization a favor, which is not meant to be. Proper orientation should be given by each organization so that each.

volunteer knows what he/she is expected to be doing without hassles and stress.

Now that you know what to do, go ahead and give it a shot.

Create your own event
If you're more of a self-starter, another great option is to organize your own event. For example, plan a party with a theme to raise money for the organization of your choice.

You can solicit companies to donate funds, food, drinks, and items for a silent auction. Other ideas include organizing an event at work, such as a blood drive or a campaign to donate food items to a local food pantry.
